What We Do and Why
The computer is
a tool. This tool at school is used to facilitate skill development, problem
solving, collaborative learning and helps to encourage creativity. In kindergarten
we learn how to use this tool while carrying out lessons that are relevant to
our academic learning goals. There is much that a computer as well as other
technology has to offer students in learning.

Activities to help Develop mouse skills
If
needed you can help your child by gently placing your hand over theirs on the
mouse.
Trace
the Line
Using a paint program, draw some thin straight
lines horizontally across the screen. Have your child trace these lines using
a different color and a thicker line.
Adaptations:
·
Draw the
lines using wiggly lines or even loops.
·
Add clip
art to make it fun, such as a mouse at the beginning and cheese at the end.
·
Draw shapes
or pictures for your child to trace.
·
Let your
child draw some lines or shapes for you to trace.
·
Draw the
lines going in different directions across the screen (diagonally or
vertically)

Match It
Using a paint program, paste in 2 each of several small clip art
pictures, OR type in several pairs of large font letters randomly around the
screen. Have your child use the cutting tool to cut out a picture (or letter)
and move the picture over the matching picture.
Adaptations:
·
Use this same technique to have your child cut out
the randomly placed letters that are in their name and place them in the
correct left to right order.
·
Use this same technique to have your child match or
place a number by a group of objects you have drawn. For example if you have
drawn two circles your child would cut out a 2 and place it by the two
circles.

Draw It
Encourage your child to draw pictures using a paint program. For
added fun and development of writing skills, ask your child to dictate (tell
you) about their picture using complete sentences. You would type what they
say. Then have your child type in their name.
